The Army Research Office (ARO) continues to fund a 4-year
project on ultraviolet communication research. Following achievements in
two existing ARO-funded projects, this new ARO grant will enable the group
to further investigate deliverable features of UV communication systems
both experimentally and analytically.
·
The ultraviolet research by the WIT lab is featured in the
May’2009 issue of IEEE Spectrum
by the article titled “Ultraviolet Radios Beam to Life” (web link http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/may09/8816).
·
The research work on UV communication by the WIT lab was
highlighted as a breakthrough area at the Army Science and
Technology Opportunities Conference, Research Triangle Park,
NC, August 26, 2008. Please see the slides (pp. 7-8) by the ARO
Division Chief in Computing and Information Sciences. The slides were
released to hundreds of attendees from academia, government and industry.
·
The WIT lab member, Michael P. Leonardi, successfully passed
defense of his M.S. thesis titled “A Pulse Position Modulation System for
Ultraviolet Non-Line-Of-Sight Communication” on June 9, 2008. He will
pursue his engineer career in AeroVironment Inc.
·
The WIT lab recently received a grant from DoD
under the DURIP program for “Instrumentation for Multiuser Non-Line of
Sight Optical Communications”, effective in May 2008. This grant allows for
in-depth experimental study of multiuser communications using ultraviolet
(UV) carriers under non-line of sight (NLOS) channel conditions. Together
with findings from the current single-user UV communication testbed funded
by a past DURIP program, new measurement results will provide foundations
for our analytical study of UV channel modeling, communication system
theory, and networking.
·
The WIT lab jointly organized the “ARO/ARL
Workshop on Ultraviolet Devices and Communication Systems” with ARO/ARL
people successfully. The one-day workshop was held in University of
Maryland, College Park, on April 23, 2008. It attracted dozens of attendees
from academia, government and industry worldwide. The workshop agenda
comprised plenary talks on UV LEDs, APDs, scattering/diffusion/turbulent UV
channels, UV communication systems and testbed. It also featured one panel session with
panelists delivering expert views on relevant subjects. Details can be
found at http://www.ee.ucr.edu/~dxu/CFP-UVworkshop08.html.
·
Dr. Arun K. Majumdar, Head of Atmospheric Laser
Propagation Branch, Naval Air Warfare Center, China Lake, CA, visited the WIT Lab on February 4, 2008. He had extensive discussions with lab
members on ultraviolet channel modeling and potential naval applications.
·
On
January 7, 2008, the WIT Lab hosted
visit of Dr.
Michail Tsatsanis, Founder and Chief Scientist of Aktino Inc., Irvine, CA.
·
On October 28, 2007, the WIT Lab had its BBQ event in Fairmont
Park in downtown Riverside.
·
On August 29, 2007, Dr. Zhengyuan Xu
presented experimental results on UV communications obtained from the UV
test-bed at the SPIE Photonics and Optics
Conference in San Diego. The work received significant attention from the peer
experts in optical wireless communications.
·
On August 1, 2007, DARPA Program Managers, Dr. Jennifer Ricklin and Dr. George D. Duchak, visited the WIT lab, evaluated the outdoor
demonstration of ultraviolet (UV) communication, and shared valuable views
with lab members on UV promising applications and program initiatives. They
also highly commented on the communication test-bed fully functional under
full exposure to the sunlight.
